Abstract
Currently, one of the main health problems is obesity and endocrine diseases, including primary and secondary hyperparathyroidism. Based on different arguments described in the literature, the association between both diseases is proposed. Objective: To establish the prevalence of primary and secondary hyperparathyroidism in patients with obesity at the University Hospital of Caracas. Methods: The type of research of this work was descriptive, transversal. The sample was made up of 54 obese patients who attended the bariatric surgery planning consultation and met the inclusion criteria. Descriptive statistics techniques were used. Results: the prevalence of hyperparathyroidism was 1.85%, with a positive correlation between the concentration levels of parathyroid hormone, vitamin D and urinary phosphorus; Osteopenia predominated in obese patients with higher parathyroid hormone concentration; these parameters studied were independent of the patient's clinical characteristics. Conclusion: this analysis confirms the data from published international studies regarding the positive relationship between parathyroid hormone and body mass index as a predictor of hyperparathyroidism in obesity.
